Elk Falls

Elk Falls

Set in a picturesque landscape, Elk Falls is 7 km from Kotagiri, further down the road from Sullivan’s bungalow. It is also known locally as Uyilatty Falls after the name of the village. The falls are lush and full during the monsoon season but are worth a visit at any time. The nearby Kookal village is known for its oranges and the Kookal valley presents a stunning view of orange blossoms from Elk Falls.

Again, as in the case of Catherine’s Falls, you can get closer to Elk Falls by trekking there. Or you can take the safer alternative of driving down a little ahead and stopping by the side of the road for a stunning view. Especially in the heavy rains season, it is sensible to visit the viewpoint rather than venturing closer.

We were there at the viewpoint in the November-December rainy season and the falls were at their forceful best. A local person advised us not to leave the viewpoint and try to get any closer to the falls because it can be very windy and the water flow is dangerous. We didn’t argue and any thoughts of getting out of the comfort zone of the distant viewpoint vanished totally.

Getting there

Elk Falls, or Uyilatty Falls, is about 7 km out of Kotagiri past the village of Kannerimukku where Sullivan’s Memorial is located. Even when Google Maps tells you you’ve reached your destination, there is nothing to see because the Falls is behind a cover of trees and slightly below your height. Drive past this point slowly and you will catch sight of the Falls behind you on the left side of the road. You may also see, sadly, the debris of paper cups, bottles and junk on the side of the road – a telltale sign you’ve arrived at the spot. It’s time to get out of the car and enjoy the view.
