Located at Johnstone’s Square (or Kamaraj Square) in the heart of Kotagiri town, Green Shop is a tourist’s delight keeping a shopper well occupied for an hour or more with its organic attractions.
This quaint little shop deals in forest and agriculture produce which are natural, wild and local. It is a marketing outlet for forest products made by local communities in the Kotagiri region. You can get varieties of honey, jams, pickles, a range of beeswax products such as candles, soaps, and lip balms, spices, herbs, millet, coffee, eucalyptus oil and wintergreen oil as well tribal embroidered cloth, shawls, artefacts – even some homemade chocolates!
Getting there
Kotagiri is about 18 km away from Cliffy Village (locally known as Kiluppi) where Triptych Nilgiris is situated. With the winding roads and the village speed breakers, it will take a 40-45 minute drive to get you there. As you drive into Kotagiri (with the golden MGR statue at one end of the long main road) and reach the other end a couple of km away, you can’t miss the silver statue of Kamaraj (erstwhile chief minister of the state) at a circle named after him – Kamaraj Circle. The British name for the circle – Johnstone Circle – is also often cited locally for the same location.
You won’t find easy parking in front of the shop and there’s invariably a traffic cop who delights in chasing you away. But you will find parking nearby.
